Number Needed to Treat + Hospital Compare = ?

The NNT (Number Needed to Treat). Example given, aspirin given immediately for a major heart attack receives a green light:

In Summary, for those who take the aspirin:

  • 97.7% will see no benefit
  • 2.3% will be helped by being saved from death
  • 1.1% will be harmed by a minor bleeding event

In Other Words:

  • 1 in 42 will be helped (life saved)
  • 1 in 167 will be harmed (non-dangerous bleeding)
